Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?
Vogue Recovery Center’s Phoenix and Las Vegas locations offer intensive outpatient programs (IOP) that typically include 9 to 15 hours of addiction treatment a week. Most times, this is spread over three to five weekdays. Many treatment centers offer intensive outpatient rehab in either the morning or evening, so it’s possible to continue fulfilling work, school, or family obligations.
An IOP can ease the transition between residential treatment or a partial hospitalization program and independence in recovery. If you don’t require a higher level of care, IOP can be a good option if you can’t take time away from work or family. An intensive outpatient program will mainly consist of group therapy. You may also meet with an individual therapist or case manager from time to time. As the name implies, you receive treatment on an outpatient basis, so you don’t live at the treatment facility like you would in residential care (also known as an inpatient treatment program). The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) defines intensive outpatient programs as Level II substance abuse care. Level II is a lower level of care than inpatient rehab and a higher level of care than other types of outpatient rehab. The goals of an IOP are to:
- Help you learn how to manage early-stage relapse symptoms.
- Teach healthy coping skills.
- Build support systems.
- Help you achieve emotional, physical, psychological, and social health in recovery.
What Therapies Are Offered in an IOP?
Types of treatment offered in an IOP depend on which program you attend. The main component of intensive outpatient treatment is group therapy. Many addiction treatment centers like Vogue Recovery Center also provide one-on-one counseling as part of intensive outpatient care.
Outpatient care may include:
- Individual therapy sessions
- Group therapy
- Medication management
- Co-occurring mental health disorder treatment
- Relapse-prevention training
- Trauma therapies like EMDR
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
- Mindfulness
- Family therapy
Is an Intensive Outpatient Program Right for Me?
An intensive outpatient program is different from inpatient rehab. It may be a good fit if you:
- Need a step-down treatment option as you transition out of inpatient rehab or a partial hospitalization program.
- Don’t require a higher level of care.
- Cannot take time away from home or work responsibilities.
- Need more structure than a typical outpatient program.
Medical and behavioral health professionals will recommend an appropriate level of care for you based on factors like:
- The severity of your drug or alcohol dependency.
- If you need mental health treatment for co-occurring disorders.
- Your history of relapses and/or risk of relapse.
What Happens After Intensive Outpatient Treatment?
Many people gradually transition into independence by attending an outpatient program (OP) after intensive outpatient treatment. The difference between an IOP and an OP is the number of hours you spend in treatment. An outpatient program is usually just one to three hours a week of group therapy. It provides a weekly touchpoint in a treatment setting where you process challenges to your sobriety and practice relapse-prevention skills. Some people choose to live at a sober-living residence during and after the outpatient treatment process.
